This blog is the new home of The Mad Farmer Liberation Front. Within you'll find lots of References to Retrotech (mainly of the typewriter variety) as well as Whimsical and Amateurish Poetry and the occasional Commentary on Whatever I'm Thinking About at the Moment.
I just got the rock-hard platen on my Torpedo 18 Ames-ized. It was reasonable, just $23.50 + shipping, as I recall. Well worth it -- what used to sound like firecrackers now sounds pleasant, and the machine works like a charm.
Brake fluid will freshen up the outer surface of a salvageable platen, but it won't help when they've petrified.
My Torpedo sounds like firecrackers too. THAT was the word I was looking for, thanks Richard.
I agree. Torpedoes are awesome. Honestly, I can't choose it over my Facit TP2 or my Hermes 3000 though...all three are equals to me. (Though the Torpedo seems to be more solidly made)
Your Torpedo 18 (flickr-photo) has a different design from my Torpedo 18. I'm wondering why yours says Remington Rand on the back. Do you know anything about this? What's your serial number? I posted an entry on my blog maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com about the Torpedo 18 back in July, I think.
The serial number is: 1291008. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25223286@N06/6006319563/) The design, I think, is mostly different in the ribbon cover. I'll have to look at yours again.
